For two millennia Hainan was where subversive officials were exiled to, so it's littered with historically significant sites, such as Temple of Five Lords (a memorial to five shunned bureaucrats) and the Tomb of Hai Rui. There are three ethnic groups on the Island, the majority of whom are the Li and Miao ethnic groups. Ethnic minority groups of Hainan Island are the Li People ,VMiao,and the Min People. The Li reside mainly in the central and southern regions of the Island.

Hainan IslandProvince is the Southern-most Province of China. It is located in the Lower South-West of the South China Sea, due South and East off the sea-coast of Guangdong Province. Neighboring Provinces and nations are in clockwise direction - GuangDong Province in the North, the Country of Vietnam at some distance to the West.

The island has tens of thousands of hectares of primitive forests, mainly located in the central regions of the Island. This is also where most ethnic homes the Li, Min and Miao ethnic groups are located.

The poetically-named Tianya Haijiao, or “Edge of the Sky, Rim of the Sea,” is a beach so scenic it’s depicted on the two-dollar Yuan note.
Future developments are expected to be huge if not overwhelming. Housing Prives have already mushroomed and much more is coming. Early in 2010 the Central Governmentv in Beijing announced its intentions for Hainan to become an international holiday destination by 2020.
Mission Hills recently unveiled a 22-course golf resort in the city of Haikou.
A space theme park that's supposed to rival Disneyland is slated to open in three to four years, and duty-free shopping and tax-refund measures are on the cards. Hainan will become of family holiday destination and in all likelyhood will not see any development of Gambling and Casino's.
There are no railways and railroads on Hainan Island.
Today, a part of the PRC Airforces' russian built Su-27 jet fighter force is based at Hainan.
In addition, the island also houses a large signals intelligence facility which tracks U.S. activity in the area and monitors traffic from commercial communications satellites.
As early as in May 1951, Hainan was targeted at the behest of U.S. Naval Intelligence for RAF (i.e. British) surveillance overflights, using Spitfire PR Mk. 19s based at Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong. This sea area includes the South China Sea Islands, which are claimed by the PRC and several other countries. It is one of the most strategically sensitive areas in the world.
